Breaking it Down: When Big Goals Feel Too Big

Thinking about what success and independence might look like in the future can feel daunting. There are so many what ifs and how to’s, and questions about where to start.
For parents and caregivers, those questions can sometimes make it difficult to know which skills to focus on first. This can lead to more spiraling thoughts and even more questions and overwhelm.
When that happens, it can help to "triage" your priorities. Ask yourself: What does my child need most right now? Not every skill needs to be taught today, or this week, or month for that matter. Focusing on what is most meaningful now can make the path forward feel much more manageable.
The same idea applies when teaching a new skill. Looking at the entire task can be intimidating. Instead, we can look at breaking the skill into small, teachable steps. We can teach one step at a time, then gradually reduce help as our child becomes more confident and successful. This process is called a task analysis.
It is very likely you already do this every day without realizing it. Think about following a new recipe, putting furniture together, or learning how to navigate a new app or game. We naturally complete one step before moving to the next. Teaching life skills works the same way.
One way to create a task analysis is to complete the task yourself while writing down each step as you go. You can also record yourself doing the task and play the video back, pausing to identify each individual step. This not only helps you create a clear teaching plan, but can also become a helpful video model for your learner.
Remember, true and lasting independence isn't built by mastering an entire skill overnight. It's built one small, successful step at a time.
